Because each liver transplant case has its own unique characteristics and traits, there is no consistent coverage rule. For that exact reason, the University Hospital of Cincinnati Liver Transplant Program provides you with a financial coordinator. Your financial coordinator will help you with the Medicaid and Medicare concerns related to your transplant.

TRICARE & Veterans Administration (VA)

Tricare

Rising healthcare costs and the closure of military bases, along with their hospitals, required that the federal government find new ways to provide healthcare. TRICARE is the federal government's new health insurance program for all seven of the uniformed services. “TRICARE Standard” is the new name for CHAMPUS. TRICARE is a cost-sharing program that helps pay for health care when military care is not available.

TRICARE may share the cost of heart, lung, heart-lung, heart-kidney, liver, kidney, liver-kidney and kidney-pancreas transplants. Patients must receive pre-authorization from the TRICARE medical director and meet TRICARE selection criteria. Pre-authorization is based on a narrative summary submitted by the attending transplant physician.

For more information regarding TRICARE transplantation benefits, contact the health benefits advisory at your nearest military healthcare facility, call the TRICARE Benefits Service Branch at (303) 676-3526 or visit their website at www.tricare.osd.mil.
